The Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) programme in Mechanical Engineering started in 1990/91 academic session. It is one of the seven academic programmes created at the inception of Faculty of Engineering and Technology. Other programmes are Chemical Engineering (CHE); Computer Science and Engineering (CSE); Civil Engineering (CVE); Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Food Science and Engineering (FSE). The main objectives of the programme are Teaching and Research in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The Department started with twenty-two (22) students in 1990/91 academic session and this has grown to about five hundred and twenty-two (522) in the current 2019/2020 academic session. Till date one thousand nine hundred and forty-one (1941) students have graduated with B. Tech. in the Department. The first set which graduated in 1995/96 consists of eighteen (18) students and the outgoing set (2018/2019) consists of 101 students.
Currently, the Department has twenty-one (21) full-time academic staff. This includes four (4) Professors, one (1) Reader, eleven (11) Senior Lecturers, eight (8) Lecturers I and six (6) lecturers II. The department also has ten (10) associate lecturers. This implies that the staff strength is adequate in spread and qualifications. The Department has three (3) multipurpose workshops; an equipped 250-capacity metal shop, fully equipped with machines for metalwork, woodwork, fabrications, welding etc., an automobile laboratory, a foundry workshop, and a central workshop with competent COREN registered Engineering Technologists.
The Department is also gradually equipping the following Laboratories: Thermo-fluids, Strength of materials, Metrology, Mechanics of Machines, Renewable Energy, Foundry, Sound and Vibrations Lab and Automotive Operations. For the future, plans are underway to establish a consultancy unit to assist relevant industries in the immediate environment.
The Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Mechanical Engineering commenced in 2001/2002 academic session. Presently the department enjoys full COREN accreditation of the program. Master and PhD programs also commenced in 2004/2005 academic session. So far, the department has turned out more than two hundred and six (206) PGD, forty-five (45) M. Tech. and twenty (20) Ph.D. graduates.
